After a week of frustration due to the weather we managed to get out on our first longer range trip of the season and headed out north east from Whitby for some wrecks located about 150 miles out and 140 due east of Berwick.

The weather looked good when we set off but the forecast proved to be a little optimistic and the 3′s and 4′s forecast turned out to be nearer fours and fives, luckily as we had headed north the water was deeper and the seas not as bad as they would have in shallower water and also the bottom was not stirred up as much.

We started fishing at 06.00 and were soon into the fish with a steady catch of decent sized cod to 12 pounds after breakfast things continued much the same with some bigger fish starting to show and Colin catching a nice cod of 16 pounds as lunch time loomed the sea’s started to moderate and the afternoon was very pleasant with calm sea’s.

The afternoon produced the biggest fish of the day which was a ling of 16lb 4ozs Colin been piped at the post for the biggest fish by Tony from Pontefract.

The last wreck of the day proved to be the best with most fish being caught on the drop before the bottom was reached. The fish were all a nice size around the 10-15lb size and everyone catching on all the drifts.

Time to head for home with a good days fishing for the time of year and nearly all cod, apart from the cod there 6 ling caught, one pollock, a colie and a red fish.

The trip home took a little longer than expected as we had to steam across the tide which slowed us down but all got back safely into Whitby and we had a quick change round ready for the 36 hour trip in the evening
