As always, we at the Whitby Charter Skippers Association (www.wcsa.co.uk) are very interested in the anglers who come to Whitby to fish from our boats. Traditionally it was the old 1lb jigger that was the favoured method utilised by anglers who visited the port, but in recent times we have seen the introduction of shads and various forms of rubber lures. As time has past we are now seeing more and more anglers switching to theses newer methods along with lighter rods and reels.

Since I learnt about shads and the use of lighter rods and thinner diameter lines my boat angling experience has improved significantly. I think my favourite method for drift fishing in the summer would be a close call between wreck fishing with baits and ground fishing with shads and rubber lures. For winter fishing I just love uptiding. Its a methods that takes some beating and I think all boat anglers should give it a go as they would love it.

My favourite method for boat fishing is using shads. In particular I like the storm shads and favour the blue colour. I also fish a lot on the south coast and down there I really like to use live baits such as sandeel and joey mackerel. I have never understood why the Whitby Charter Skippers dont use livebaits as they are the way to go for the bigger fish. Have any of the Whitby boats got livebait wells fitted ??

Its very rare I fish with baits using artificials as my main attrack from about 30 odd years ago when muppets were all the rage and I’ve just sort of tried any amount of strange rubber things and bits of shiny plastic with hooks in to lure fishing from a boat with plugs and worms but if I had to pick one method for the whole year it would have to be shad fishing
Shad fishing when they’re having a go is just fantastic, no little taps and was that a bite, balanced tackle light rods that bend and give and smallish (6500) multipliers loaded with 20lb mono or 30lb braid and you know you’ve got every one one. Cod of 4/5lb on the right gear give a good account of themselves and certainly kill the old tale of cod not fighting

Shads a great to use you have some fantastic sport with them i have used a lot of different methods for catching cod but useing shads has to be th best.

I will be fitting a tank with air supply during the winter for keeping mackerel and such fresh during the summer months, would be interesting to see what live sand eels could do apposed to other lure methods (if they could be sourced in sufficient numbers that is)

Winter and coloured water I thoroughly enjoy fishing traditional uptiding techniques with big baits.
Summer methods include live baiting launce in the hope of catching pollock and bass. Also enjoy fishing big mackerel baits fished at anchor downtide for the tope. Finally thoroughly enjoy fishing shads on the drift for cod.

With regards to the livebaits. I spoke to a couple of lads who fish from a private boat. They said they fished live pennock (baby coal fish about 6 inch long) on a flowing trace on the wrecks. They said the cod love them.

I used alot of hokies last year fished with a jigger on the bottom I like my jigging in the summer but I also use Shads as well and have had good results. However last year the Hokies and Jiggers seamed to out fish the Shads as a mate of mine only fishes with Hokies and on one perticular day I changed to shads but he was getting more fish on Hokies having said that the fish I got on the Shads were of better sizes also it,s lighter work on the arms.
I also enjoy Uptiding through the winter months although my boat is out of the water for the winter.
I would say 2009 was a year to remember for me best year i,v had for a while now. Let hope this year is as good if not better.

summer fishing at anchor over sand waiting for the tope to run the reel up to a scream is both very relaxing and very satifying method of unwinding. Drifting along in a t shirt catching some rays across the inshore wrecks with light gear shads/big ling tempter baits is a close second. Uptiding for the winter cod only comes third as its usually so bloody cold but still a great day esp if the winter sun is out to play waiting for the tell tale nod nod of the rod tip and the speedy gathering of line to feel the weight of the prize gorging on the hooks.

Wreck fishing and more wreck fishing, Shads from spring onwards on the drift, plenty of double figure cod, pollack. Live baiting with whole full sized mackerel both on the drift and at anchor over the wrecks, Even had double figure pollack, bass, cod, ling on them. Sometimes we do the sand banks for the turbot, brill,blonde ray, plaice, but not often.In the summer, we do anchor the wrecks for large conger, ling, and bits and pieces. it’s quite a mixture, beleive it or not i don’t really have a preference, apart from having fun. uptiding has got to be the way to get hooked on boat fishing. minimal effort and you’ve got a 90% chance of catching something.
livebaiting could be really interesting mick. im sure it would sort out the larger specamins of pollock on the wrecks and over reefs

I really enjoy fishing for pollock with jellyworms, i have a 12lb class rod, which makes for great sport, you just cant beat those first few hard diving runs. shad fishing comes a close second ive caught some realy nice fish on shads and with well balanced light gear you get the best sport.

got to be shad fishing during the clearer water periods
using lighter rods and reels every year
i dont think you can beat the feeling of a decent fish gently mouthing the shad before finally hitting it and turning for the bottom.
dirty water its got to be uptiding without a doubt

Well for me it has to be tope fishing in the summer then winter uptiding for the cod i sometimes go wreck fishing using shads the blue ones seem to be the ones ive caught most fish on found a good wreck last year with a good head of pollack on so this year me and (deadlyfish) rich are going to give this one a go with jellyworms the (black ones with a red tail) seem to be the one to have so we will see what happens might just have a go for a portbegel shark this year that should be good fun on a 16ft boat ( richard think we need a bigger boat)Ha Ha tightlines to one & ALL Alain

When i first start i like to use a jig, it is a killer method on wrecks, but after two to three hours i will go on the shads, it is a lot easier on the arms the older you get

Only been wreck fishing once so not got a favourite method but in years gone by my favourite method was chrome pirks and rippers.

While only a newcomer to boat fishing, shad fishing has got me hooked. They really gave you an edge over the wrecks last week and some guys did really well with sidewinder sandeels for the pollock.

It depends totally on where you are and conditions-
In shore, shallow water slow drift and wanting only big fish -pirk only
In shore, shallow water slow drift and wanting any size fish – pirk and hokies (smaller hokies if you want mac)
If your deeper water and you want to avoid casting the pirk all the time -shad
If you want ling bait every time (on its own or with hokies in dirty water)
The most enjoyable fishing is when your catching fish
