WCSA Autumn Angling Festival 9 year old boy holds top position

A nine year old lad and his dad travelled from Wakefield last week to enter the WCSA Autumn Angling Festival the weather was gloomy with rain and dark skies and with possibly the biggest tides of the year prospects of landing a winner was not exactly good,

This did not deter the many anglers who braved the elements on the first day of the festival especially the father and son duo from wakefield west yorkshire ( sorry I don’t have there names as yet) they were fishing from  John Whitton’s boat  never-can-tell ( very apt) and here is a brief description from one of the anglers on board that day

(quote) we were joined on board today with a father and son from Wakefield taking his son on a boat for his first time when suddenly he said to his dad I’m stuck on bottom after around 5 minutes of pulling he realised the bottom was coming towards him  after around 25 minutes we see it and the little lad nearly threw the rod over in excitement and here’s a picture of the beast  with this he took biggest fish of the day weighing in at 20lb 14oz i think which I’m sure everyone would agree this fish would be a big achievement for any of us on a old Scarborough reel never mind a 9 year old  the fish fell to a special bait as the boy said a single mackerel head  (un quote)

What a great little story this is and believe me that fish will take some beating would this be a record for Whitby?  a nine year old winning first place in a major Angling festival ( correct me if I am wrong )  if the lad dose win first place along with the £1000 prize this would make himthe envy of every young angler in the country, it would make all the headlines in all the fishing papers and magazines and do wonders for sea angling and Whitby as a whole, I am sure all the skippers will wish the young lad all the best for his fish staying at the top of the leader board until the finish,

the weather looks set to keep the boats in port until next week now so he has a great chance fingers crossed for ya kid.

It was my son that caught the Ling, his name is Alex Shaduwa. It was a fantastic day for both of us, not just catching the ling but the whole experience of the day. I only go boat fishing once or twice a year and Alex has been asking to come with me for a while. You can imagine, all he wants to do now is go sea fishing!! It’s a great story for Alex, Whitby and all young anglers every where.
